On my last day in Shanghai I spent a few hours walking around in the French Concession area, near Xintiandi. Just outside of the very modern indoor, multi-level shopping mall and restaurants are neighborhoods defined by European-style buildings with corridors that reminded me of the narrow streets outside of Paris. Only the people and the food and the signage, of course, were quite different. It seemed like every major street was an open market on Saturday.

Here I made my way down one of the larger streets, near a neighborhood high school. To my right was a butcher shop selling cuts of different meats, and the interesting thing was that the meat cuts were typically very small. No 96-oz steaks here. Things tended to be thinly sliced, and packaged in smaller portions. For some reason they looked more appetizing that way. On my left side was a vendor of cheap plastic toys and keychains. Anyway, this cute kid came charging toward me with this basket on his head, uncovering himself just at the last moment. His mom really liked the fact that I took his picture. I wish there was some way I could get her a copy.

Reminds me of what my sone did while visiting his grandfather. One day he put a basket like this on his head and said "It's my cap" and roamed around the entire market proudly.
