So we left Jolo yesterday on this small plane to go to the city of Zamboanga a half hour away. Just a few fascinating facts about air travel on this small island:

1. When I was on the back of my Uncle’s motorbike a couple of days ago taking pictures around the town on Jolo, he said, “Do you want to go to the airport?” I knew we had to go to my cousin Boy’s house for dinner, and I said, “Do we really have time to go all the way over there?” He said “Of course we do.” He promptly turned the bike left and we were there in this spot about fifteen SECONDS later.

2. Yesterday morning, after packing, we were all sitting around a couple of tables in the family compound having a “simple” breakfast of freshly baked rolls, sweet sate, fried fish and coffee. It was 8:15 am and I wondered aloud whether we should leave now for our flight that left at 8:30. My aunt said “Nah, we usually don’t leave for the airport until we hear the plane pass overhead and land first.”

3. After a short while when we didn’t hear the plane it became clear that it was late. My uncle called the airport on his cell phone, said a few words in Tagalog, and hung up. When I asked what we were going to do, he said, “Don’t worry, the plane is late. The airport will call us when the plane gets here.”

4. After passing a couple of sets of heavily armed guards with M-16 rifles, one of them helped me with my bag.

5. As we “checked in” at the one and only counter-gate thingy, the nice woman at the counter had me get on a big scale to figure out exactly how much I weighed.

6. The ground crew had to shoo some children and dogs off of the runway before we took off.

7. I took this shot as we were heading toward our plane. I was able to wipe the outside of the window near my seat clean before I got on board to be sure I would be able to take some clear shots out the window!

Zamboanga Airport, which I passed through just a few days earlier, now seemed like a teeming fortress of security and high technology!
