Today my mom and I traveled about 90km outside of Beijing to visit the Great Wall section at Mutianyu. Once I got over the harrowing cable-car ride and my somewhat paralyzing acrophobia, it was an amazingly zen-like experience. My mom and our tour guide left the wall almost immediately because of the cold, and I stayed up there for about an hour longer. There were very few tourists and other people around, so I had the place to myself for quite awhile. The vista and the views were unbelievable, as expected. I was not prepared for how steep and narrow the wall is in some places. I wanted to take some shots of the landscape and the wall winding its way through the mountains, but I was somewhat disappointed in the results. The landscape is very gray this time of year, and there is very little color and contrast to set off the wall. So, I thought I would focus on this huge, almost vertical section that extended some distance from the portion where I was. I usually hate selected-saturation shots like this, but here I thought it would be effective to desaturate the wall and the mountain.

Tomorrow we will be in Xiamen, where it's hopefully a lot warmer than Beijing. We will be seeing long-lost relatives of the family, most of whom we have never met before. I'm looking forward to it!

Happy New Year everyone! It's already 2008 over here!

I love what you've done here. You've captured the steepness alright, and the detail of the steps is awesome. This is wonderful.

I think you have illustrated the magnificence of this wonder quite well here. Unbelievably steep staircase.

Very cool image. I'd like to visit China one day -- especially the Wall. However, steps like that would scare the hell out of me.
