Final shot from the Brach's Candy Factory series. This is a "typical" abandoned factory shot, but I never cease to be fascinated by the debris on the floors, the peeling paint and the standing water that is always present in these places. This place has been abandoned for a little over 12 years, but the paint all peels the same way, and just about the same amount of debris appears to be on the floors. As I mentioned before, the "water" that is in this room is actually full of sugar, so it is really goopy when you step in it. I need to get some real spelunking shoes instead of the old sneakers I was wearing...

BTW, here's a great hassy shot taken by Bill Vaccaro of our group in front of the Bean.

Oh, so guess what? You may know that they are shooting the new "Batman" movie here in Chicago. A friend of mine tells me that the director and his crew were driving around the city a few weeks ago trying to find a factory to blow up in the movie. Guess which factory they picked?

No kidding Mike? They are going to blow this place up? That may make seeing the movie worthwhile...well, maybe I will wait for it be out on DVD.

When MikeLangelo and I went out back I was amazed at how huge this place was...I feel I only scratched the surface

Well, I was going to sat that if I could ever make my way to Chicago, I'd love to see this factory up close and personal.

Then I read your last paragraph. Argh! :)

I like the vandalism and the connectivity that has to society. The pulled down pipes hint at idle time not decay of time. The haloed effect is something I find very enhancing of the image content too.
Seems such a waste of time and money to build something only to let be abandoned.

What marvelous light. Certainly has the dystopic after the fall feel to it.

I thought it was the Titanic! ;-)

Hi Mike! I've been lurking and checking out your posts for a while, but this one made me break the silence. Terrific balance of light in the foreground reflections and background, and what DOF! I've been trying to figure that out with my topside stuff recently. You nailed it!
Cheers! Trisch

I missed this particular room during our trip there. That goop on the floor definitely looks incredibly sticky. Must get back there with the spelunking shoes before they blow the place up in the name of Batman!

This is beautifully exposed Mike, I love the natural light that fills the room. This would indeed be the perfect setting for a Batman movie.

I totally missed this room. And that's probably a good thing based on the amount of goop on the floor. I would have lost a shoe for sure! Great shot!

The vast amount of detail youv'e captured here is amazing!!

I'd LOVE to find out if/when they might blow this place up... now THAT would be photo-OP!

This factory has tons of history to it. When my grandparents came here from Italy. This was the first jobs they had and stayed there until they retired. I remember goin there a bunch of times and eating all the candy. Brachs always had the best assortment of any candy out there. Awesome to see it being used in the batman movie.
