We took the kids to the Mote Marine Research Laboratory this weekend. It's a fancy name for a kids' aquarium. I'm sure there's lots of legitimate research going on there, but the public museum part is mainly entertainment for kids. One thing I found fascinating was the jellyfish tank. This one was actually very nicely lit and fully transparent through the other side of the tank. We have a similar exhibit at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and I have been trying to take a decent shot of those jellies for years. The lighting in the Chicago tank is so dim and one-dimensional that it makes for horrible shots. Here, though, the light through the top of the tank was bright enough to define the jellies, and the bluish light from TV monitors across the room on the other side of the tank added some additional color. I had to wait a few minutes for the jellies to arrange themselves so that I wouldn't see the people and the TV screens on the other side. Finally, a tungsten white-balance adjustment really brought in an interesting color balance and contrast.

Nicely done. I prefer the aquatic shots... good example of what it looks like to dive.
