Over a half-million people gathered in downtown Chicago yesterday for the largest-yet immigrant rights rally in the United States. The gathering was peaceful and friendly, yet meaningful and potent. It wasn't as organized as I thought it would be, in that the sound system wasn't operating very well in Grant Park (the destination site). Also, because people marched from far-away neighborhoods like Pilsen and Rogers Park, I suspect that by the time they got to Grant Park they were probably exhausted. Many had their entire families with them.

Yesterday was touted as "A Day Without Immigrants," in that many did not go to work so that others could see how vital immigrants are to the economy and everyday life. It remains to be seen how successful the rally and protest was, but the rally was a dramatic site nonetheless.

Mike - this could go in Life magazine. I like the perspective of the crowd stretching back in between the buildings. Love the trombone player in the front row!

The f8 and 15mm gives not shortening and therefore no false idea of the numbers. Great shot indeed. And after almost all of us are immigrants, or a descendant of them.

I had a long discussion with someone about this situation and the rights of immigrants (many illegal). My father came to this country from Mexico, and did it all legally. I have so many issues with illegal immigrants...but this probably isn't the proper venue for my voice. Regardless, this is a great capture of the event.

Excellent capture here. The depth is great. Were you on top of a garbage can on the street corner there?
