My oldest competed in the Illinois State Chess Tournament yesterday. I spent most of the day wandering around with my camera and bag full of lenses. Chess tournaments are amazing to watch. Little kids are playing with dolls and coloring books one minute while they are waiting, and then they sit down and use wits and focus that are far above what most adults can muster. Here are the opening moves in round 2 of the day. It's a flurry of activity. Each round can last up to an hour, and as matches are over the kids leave the table. More to come...

Back in college I played in one of these mass tournaments against Jonathan Mestel. He played against 42 of us simultaneously - and won 41 games + 1 draw.
