Nikon D2X

It has been a difficult few days. It is windy, cold and gray.

In the blustering snow today, I ventured to this beach, where my dad often used to take me when I was little. I snapped this picture in the howling wind. Back then, my dad would hold my hand and walk with me down the long sandy dunes, and we would climb up and down the small cliffs, making our way toward the lighthouse pier. There we would look out on the water and draw on the pier with chalk.

On my way back, I saw a man standing with his little boy, the boy couldn't have been more than 2, looking at the seagulls on the frozen beach and tossing stones. They were the only other people on the beach. I told the man that my dad used to take me there when I was the same age as his little boy. I also told him that my dad passed away just a few days ago.

He said he just lost his dad too. I said, "Sucks, doesn't it?"

"Yes, it does. It really does."

This is a beuatiful, haunting picture. Even before reading your words, this
picture with its lonely benches and bleak landscape conveys a sense of loss.

I found your website through a link on another photoblog and first I just want to say I love your work, 2nd...I'm so sorry for your loss. It is always hard losing a loved one! I agree with the previous comment about the picture already conveying a sense of loss!

Wow. I love emotive shots to begin with and in the context of the narrative it has me teary. That's a good thing. Thanks for sharing your loss with us and capturing so well that feeling in this beautiful photo.

I love the picture. I hope knowing that so many people have you and your family in their thoughts and prayers helps even a tiny bit right now.

Oh my. I can so relate Mike. Today is the 2nd anniversary of my Dad's passing. It hard at any time of the year, but close to a holiday (for me) makes it just that much harder. My sincerest condolences.

Beautiful moody shot. :)

I'm sorry about your dad too. My dad left my mom and I when I was an infant. It's hard without a dad. I love you picture and words. Very touching and heartfelt. It really adds so much to the picture. Just remember he is always with you in your thoughs and memories, and you'll see him again soon one day. Just enjoy life while you can, and make your dad proud. You have some great pictures, I'll be sure to check back frequently.

Just had lots to catch up on, but 'choices' was brilliant, it has been great fun checking up on your recent posts.

And now having read your info with this post my 'great fun' comment above seems rather out of place. I have a son who does not live with me and it is a daily hurt not being with him and it has knocked a big chunk out of my character. He is resilient but also would be different if we were still together. I saw him for the 1st time in 10 months last week and it was such a joy to spend time together and talk and laugh, I will not see him again till Feb which is a long way away.

Sorry to hear about your father. Losing a parent is horrible. I think it's wonderful that this man and his son were on the beach that day...I often do you see that sort of thing during a Chicago winter? I think it was a perfect tribute to your father that they were there. Your memories live on.

12.18.05, 06:49 PM, Rock:

I'm so sorry to read about the loss of your father. You have my sincere sympathy. This is a wonderful tribute to him.

12.18.05, 11:46 PM, Obelix:

Ouch, Chicago :(. Good stuff, Mike.

12.25.05, 12:20 AM, Obelix:

Very sorry to hear about your loss, Mike. I did not read your post in full the previous time :((. I read your comment in a future post and then I went back to read the other posts.

I hope you are getting better.
