Just a few minutes after yesterday's shot, the masses started past the starting line of the marathon. More than 40,000 people ran the race, and it is nothing more than staggering to see so many people seemingly crammed so close together. In a race like this there are so many people that it typically takes more than seven minutes for people near the rear of the pack to just cross the starting line. But by the time they reach this point, at least they are able to open up a bit and run more freely. What strikes me about this shot is that if you look closely, nearly everyone is smiling or has a grin on their faces of some kind. But that changes dramatically from later on in the race.

Thank you all so much for your comments from yesterday. My ankle is healing well and (among other minor bothersome health matters I must also get fixed) I hope to be able to race another marathon within the next several months. I'm itchin' to get back out there!

I actually prefer today's shot over yesterday's. I was considering cropping it to get rid of the truck and railing on the right side, and indeed that results in a very dramatic shot of just... people. But I wanted to capture the width of the front, and I think it results in a more interesting picture. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. Thanks!

Great shot. The van is a nice break in the sea of bodies. You would have fit in quite nicely with those 3 in the yellow in front. I've decided that I'm going to run it next year. I started training again yesterday even though it's been 3 years since I've trained for anything.

An, nice. The van is distracting :(. Can you try a crop without the van?

Sorry, can't stay a look at your picture - I've got to run :)

I actually like the way the runners curve into the photo. As if the path subtly sweeps them in to spill them out into the shot. Cropping out the van I think would eliminate that.

Sorry to hear that your ankle injury prevented you from running the marathon after all -- but I can't believe you ran that thing 8 other times.

I love all the colors in this! I see all the smiling faces, I can only imagine towards the end, they weren't smiling as much :-)

Fantastic shot !!! So colorful.
I would definitely cut off the van.

I looks like sea of colors and people. There are so many faces to look at. Excellent POV.

What a great shot! All those colors and faces, just fanastic.

You did a good job documenting the scene. That's a huge crowd. I would feel a bit claustrophobic.

That's incredible.
